Bike Ride | Fall Foliage Fun Ride - The First Annual Fall Foliage Fun Ride We will begin at the Natural Bridge State Park main parking lot at 6477 South Lee Highway, Natural Bridge, VA 24578. Check in will begin at 8:00am and first bikes/vehicles out will be at 9:00am (last bike 10:30am). A very simple and scenic route is planned to allow you to enjoy the colors of fall throughout Lexington, Rockbridge, Bath and Alleghany Counties. Although the route itself is only about 60 miles it will take you on a minimum 2 hour ride (feel free to stop and enjoy any and/or all of the interesting things you see along the way as there is no required finish time and the Cook-Off goes til 7:00pm) through some of the most breathtaking scenery and mountain views in the entire state. We will leave out heading North on Route 11 through Natural Bridge. Along the way we will pass the Natural Bridge Zoo, Cline's Dinosaur Kingdom II, the Virginia Safari Park, the Famous Pink Cadillac Diner (which appears on several websites as the #1 roadside attraction in Virginia) and Virginia Gold Asian Pear Orchard (best pears anywhere) on our way to Lexington. We will travel straight through Historic Lexington with all of its shops and restaurants, passing Stonewall Cemetary, Washington and Lee University and VMI. We will then turn (left) on Route 39 passing the Virginia Horse Center and continue through the Goshen Pass and the quaint little Town of Goshen. One more (left) turn onto Douthat State Park Road #629 for the final 20 miles through the forest continuing through the park to the Clifton Forge Shrine Club parking lot. From there you will grab a shuttle bus back into the park to the CAMPSITE COOK-OFF and OKTOBERFEST. As you drove through the park you probably experienced the smell of bbq wafting through the Whispering Pines Campground at Douthat State Park which would be the CAMPSITE COOK-OFF and OKTOBERFEST. This campfire cook-out is a bit different than most. In this one, the cooks won’t know what type of meat they will be cooking until they arrive. Friday night, teams will be given the several meats to prepare overnight. You will be able to walk to each of the 21 campsites (teams) and taste their samples. This is actually a judged competition with the winning team receiving $1,000.00 so they ALWAYS bring their best. If you still want more (or just different) food, there will be other options available for purchase. Devils Backbone will be onsite with a selection of their famous beer for $3 and several local wineries including Blue Ridge Winery will be offering their products at $5 a glass. There will also be a SELECT group of craft vendors offering their wares for sale throughout the campground. You won't want to miss the entertainment stage featuring a number of bands including the finale by Chad Nickell and the loose change that will be offering a variety of musical styles throughout the day.
